Here are some pictures showing what it looks like as the water recedes. Most of these were taken July 4th. The stench is almost unbearable and is difficult to describe (dead fish, rotten eggs, sewage, petroleum products all wrapped into one)
Highway 169
all the black areas that look burnt are oil
Road 3- look at the water lines on the houses The owner of this house had just finished completely re-furbishing and restoring this house before the flood hit.
The water line on the house below is hard to see but it was almost to the roof
looking east down Road 3
water still across the road
166/169 junction - Because of contaminates this is still not open to traffic.
On the 4th to get to Marc's folks who live on the East side of the Verdigris (only ~6 miles from us) we had to make an hour long drive up through Independence to get to their house. The following pictures were taken from that side of the river.
washed out shoulder of the highway
on Road 3 from on top of the Verdirgis river bridge
what once was a beautiful cornfield
another cornfield
The marks on the road that someone painted to record how high it was getting
pointing to the mark where the water crested
the crest record it says 7-02-07 6:20 am
The piers where the old bridge was many years ago. The water line is above them.
water rushing through the trees along the river
July 2nd, The river finally crested sometime this morning and is very slowly receding. Here are some pics taken this at 6pm. However more storm clouds are rolling in so there is a slight chance that it could go up again Highway 169 - Blue arrow shows where it crested
Road 3 - where it meets highway 169 Looking East, these people were unloading a boat.
West side of highway 169 and road 3 the water was covering the railroad tracks
Looking south to road three compare with yesterday morning pictures below
July 1st, 2007 Verdigris River levee broke over night and now the east side of Coffeyville is flooded. Highway 166 East is closed and Highway 169 north/south is closed. Buckeye/Onion Creek water receded over night so all North and South bound traffic is being detoured past our house. However, the rain is coming down again and the river is actually backing up Onion creek so Buckeye will probably be closed again before the days end. The water at Onion creek is actually flowing upstream because of the river. Many many houses and businesses are flooded. Highway 169 looking North from OK state line
blue arrows show barricade, orange arrow points down State-line Rd where we live
looking south towards Road 3 (east/west rd) now completely under-water
water half-way up the garage door the blue house (see pictures at bottom of the page of the same house taken from road 3 yesterday)
blue arrow points where we were driving yesterday
On our way north on Buckeye to see the damage.
this was all under water yesterday and probably will be again later today
Junction 169/166 in Coffeyville
Semi-trucks with their route cut off parked waiting to decide what to do
Heading South on Buckeye...back towards home
water flowing upstream under culvert
Another road under-water east of Buckeye
Onion Creek looking up-stream from the bridge
Water across Buckeye deeper then it was on the way into town...again flowing the wrong way over the road
Pictures taken June 30th 2007 after we got 6-8 inches of rain over night. Because it has been such a wet spring and raining off and on for the last several days there is no place for the water to go.
The North half of our pastures
the blue circled area is where there is normally a tiny pond
Onion Creek Flooding Buckeye, the road north of us. This road has flooded 4 times this year. Most times it does not flood once a year.
the water stretches as far as you can see
Highway 169, our alternate route into town when Buckeye is flooded. The water has never gotten this high and it is expected to go completely over the road by the end of the day.
hay bales
Onion creek white (brown) water.
Verdigris River Flooded in the back ground is a railroad bridge there were only a few feet clearance between the water and it
crossroads by the river, lots of people were taking pictures
straight East of the crossroad
North of the crossroads. Blue arrow shows where new Super Wal-Mart is supposed to be built behind those trees and the site is all under water.
stilt-house next to the river (man has a boat for when it floods)
Road 3 - 3 miles south of OK/KS state line this is also mostly the Verdigris river out of it's banks looking towards the East. The river is behind the line of trees.
mailbox almost underwater only see the top half of the box none of the post
Deer out in broad daylight because their woods are flooded
a pond...well it was at one point now it's a lake spanning several pastures
6 foot tall fence posts
someone's yard
